Petty Officer 2nd Class Victoria Granado:

Aboard Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Mobile (LCS 26), Sailors of varying rank and rate stand watch on the ship’s bridge – from driving the ship to watching the ocean surface for contacts. Twenty-four hours a day, Mobile’s Sailors man their watch stations. Optimally-manned, LCS demand each Sailor perform the duties of three legacy Sailors.

Boatswain’s Mate Chief Petty Officer Jesus Hernandez has served every one of his 19 years in the U.S Navy on destroyers and cruisers. Though no stranger to standing watch on a smaller ship, Hernandez noted some significant differences during his first deployment on an LCS. The assigning of watches that are typically reserved for officers are also assigned to senior enlisted Sailors.

“I stand Junior Officer of the Deck,” said Hernandez. “On this deck it’s a mixture of Quartermaster of the Watch, Boatswain’s Mate of the Watch and everything else that comes with being a JOOD. An LCS is completely different from any other ship I have been on.”

Hernandez explained that on ships with a traditional watch configuration there would be a minimum of three officers on the bridge at one time, each with a very specific role to fill.

“On the Mobile, a lot of duties and functions are combined into one watch,” continued Hernandez. “Which means a much longer and intensive training pipeline to get qualified.”

To stand JOOD on Mobile, Hernandez took courses to learn how to drive the ship as well as how to operate the ship’s navigation system. As the ship’s Deck Leading Chief Petty Officer, Hernandez stands his watches and carries out his duties in anchoring evolutions, flight deck evolutions, small boat operations, and search and rescue operations.

Lt. Calvin Davies, navigator for Mobile, stands watch as Officer of the Deck and is also well acquainted with the consolidation of watch positions.

“When I’m standing watch on the bridge, I’m the OOD, the helmsman and the conning officer all wrapped up into one,” said Davies.

When not on the bridge, Davies serves as the legal officer, the training officer, and is the head of the ship’s administration department.

“It’s great that my main billet as the ship’s navigator goes hand-in-hand with my watch standing,” said Davies. “Outside of that, I am constantly considering what perspective I need to approach something. From a legal officer’s perspective? Or a training officer’s?”

Assuming multiple and varied responsibilities extends to Mobile’s junior enlisted as well. For instance, Sonar Technician (Surface) 2nd Class Michelle Venegas, from Phoenix, Ariz., stands watch as a lookout on the bridge wings.

“I have a lot of professional pride in being a lookout for the ship,” said Venegas. “We’re the ‘watchful eye’ for the crew. It’s important that the rest of the team on the bridge has a visual of what is out there outside of what the radars can tell them.”

When not scanning the horizon for surface contacts, Venegas is the supervisor for her work center, the command’s training petty officer, the secretary for the Junior Enlisted Association and administrator of official correspondence for the entire crew.
Whether it is plotting the ship’s course, signaling to a helicopter during flight quarters or compiling a training report, Sailors aboard Mobile are supporting the needs of the ship and each other which, in turn, supports the mission.

“Serving on an LCS has really shown me what a Sailor is capable of,” said Hernandez. “It’s been exciting to see how we can work together and sync up to get the job done.”

Littoral Combat Ships are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. LCS integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence missions around the globe.

Celebrating Women in the U.S. Navy

The Navy is celebrating Women’s History Month: admiral says females ‘can do anything in today’s military’ and the Americans for a Stronger Navy is covering the news.

Press reports reflect that in 2023, Naval Station Norfolk gets its first Black woman commanding officer, while the Blue Angels get their first female F/A-18 E/F demonstration pilot.

For the Navy, 2023 has been a year of firsts.

Captain Janet Days became the first Black woman to become the commanding officer of Naval Station Norfolk for the first time in the base’s 106-year history.

2023 also saw former Naval Air Station Oceana pilot Lt. Amanda Lee becoming their first female F/A-18E/F demo pilot for the Navy flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels.

According to the Naval History and Heritage Command, the first women to serve in the U.S. Navy were nurses, beginning with the Navy Nurse Corps in 1908.

In 1974, the Navy designated the first woman as an aviator.

The U.S. Naval Academy admitted its first women in 1976.

In 1994, the Navy issued the first orders for women to be assigned aboard a combatant ship, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower.

In 2010, the Navy lifted its ban on women serving aboard submarines.

And although the Navy has yet to have its first female Navy SEAL, a woman completed the grueling 37-week course last year to become the Navy’s first Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman.

On Monday, a group of female military leaders discussed women’s role in 2023, as part of the Department of Defense’s annual Women’s History Month celebration every March.

“I know when I came in the Navy in 1985, a lot of the doors were closed,” said the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Lisa Franchetti. “And now, 10 years after the repeal of all combat exclusions, I can see that the doors are not just open, but they’re completely gone. And I think the question for women today is no longer, ‘What can I do?’ It’s ‘What do I want to do?’ because you can do anything in today’s military.”

Unsung Navy Heros – Underwater Demolition Teams

During World War II, the United States Navy played a crucial role in the Allied victory. While some naval officers and crew members became well-known heroes, many others went unrecognized for their contributions.

One such group of unsung heroes was the Navy’s underwater demolition team, or UDT. These highly skilled divers were tasked with clearing the way for amphibious landings by removing obstacles such as mines and other explosive devices from the seafloor.

Among these brave men was a young diver named Jack. Jack had grown up in a small town in the Midwest and had always been fascinated by the ocean. When he heard about the UDT, he knew that he had to be a part of it. He trained for months, learning how to use explosives and navigate underwater. When he finally graduated, he was assigned to a team that would be involved in the upcoming invasion of Okinawa.

As the invasion approached, Jack and his team were tasked with clearing a path for the landing craft. They worked tirelessly, swimming back and forth between the shore and their ship, carefully placing explosives and detonating them to clear the way. The work was dangerous and exhausting, but they knew that the success of the invasion depended on their efforts.

On the morning of the invasion, Jack and his team were among the first to hit the beach. They had to clear a path through a dense minefield while under heavy fire from enemy troops. But they pressed on, working through the smoke and the chaos to make sure that the landing craft could make it to shore safely.

Thanks to their efforts, the invasion was a success. The Allies were able to gain a foothold on Okinawa, which would prove to be a crucial stepping stone in the fight against Japan. But despite their heroism, Jack and his team were never recognized for their bravery. They returned home quietly, slipping back into civilian life without fanfare or celebration.

Years later, as an old man, Jack would look back on his time in the UDT with pride. He knew that he and his fellow divers had played a crucial role in the war effort, and he was grateful for the experience. And while he may not have received the recognition that he deserved, he knew that he had done his part to help secure freedom and democracy for future generations.
